I'm inside today, in Pittsburgh. The snow and ice last night made a 6:00am walk through East Liberty a non-starter. And besides, I needed to arrive at the airport for a flight home by nine.
|
And I feel delighted and calmed by the design inside the American Airlines terminal: a ceiling held up by strong brown "branches" with white lights placed like constellations behind them. And silver leaves of many trees inset on a shiny floor, with a glowy, paddle-like Alexander Calder mobile slicing through the tallest of the indoor spaces.
And I know that a team of people decided to design, contract, and bring this to the the rest of us. Just because, beauty matters. The design here raises my mood from a winter's brooding into a soaring space of wonder.

I'm reminded that for the ages, people have produced beauty, often over utility.
From the days of potters placing glyphs and stories on jugs and jars, and artisans and artists adorning churches and chalices, and nomadic people designing gorgeous garb while tending to family, flocks, and flowers.
|
And in a place like this most useful of spaces, I'm relieved, that people building sheltering and industrious boxes know how important it is to include beauty too. Even if a grey box with electricity and running water, and lit up signs would "do."
|
The reflection of nature here shows me brighter skies, colors that tantalize, and reminds me of minds that inspire. Basically, it fills my heart with hope and makes my eyes smile, while my gaze drifts upward.
I know from yoga, looking up can affect one's mood too.
|
And today, I'm mobile too, traveling the fastest I ever do, by sky. So I imagine that with this higher speed – which will be a teeny bit closer to that of light than usual – I'll see more, but remain a touch younger as time warps in a magical way.1
|
And to share a little wide-eyed stardust with you, I'm sending this dispatch out via Ireland on St Patrick's Day (thank you 🍀 MailPoet Plugin), and hopefully you also will feel a glimmer of beauty and glow as you go about your day and look around with wonder too.
