Some of us can't describe everything that is happening in our lives. Especially when huge redirections in career or life stages, or grief, come at us fast.

And despite our attempts to fly through life with psychic high beams lighting our way - I've come to know that most of life is mysterious, and meant to remain that way.

To find touches of clarity in cloudy times, I've made an art practice that helps me move inside the mystery, give me peace, and even show me what I need to focus on for the future.

In order to keep my 'inner selfie' practice do-able, I keep it simple. I open a phone photo from a moment that moved me, and re-work it using markup tools. No apps. No Photoshop, nothing but the digital equivalent of a box of crayons

I draw, erase, add stickers and symbols from previous pieces, and draw again. I watch what my fingers are doing until my eyes soften to a feeling of "that's complete."

There's nearly always a surprise in what the resulting image reveals to me, and also what others report back about what they see.

Via this practice, I become at peace with some problem and gain trust in life's process. And more often than not, solutions reveal themselves through serendipity, chance encounters, or opportunities the next day.

In case you hadn't noticed yet, visual symbols, music, dance, and other creative modalities give us a way to move with the mysteries, shift tough dynamics, and learn new things about ourselves. And if we share our creativity, we can sometimes support and delight others too.

That's the power of art, it moves the viewer, because it moved the maker.

I often wonder, without some of us dancing around the mystery of human experience and revealing what we can't state plainly in words, if life would become harshly mechanistic. Honestly we don't need more of that – AI can cover linear meaning conveyance just fine.

It feels important to focus on creating from spaces far less plain. Deeply felt and multi-dimensional spaces, and for us to bring into form our occasional dips into ever shifting mystery.

Perhaps what we really need is more artful demarcations at our rites of passage; art and music that enhances our emotions; and myths that reveal the kooky doings from ancestral plotlines with brand new, life-affirming twists.

With gratitude and encouragement,
Elizabeth

I may never know, but I'll share what I've seen and experienced in case you want to know how …

What happened to the chicken bag?

The types of explanations we received as kids about the mundane questions of life, alters how we develop our capacity for internal reasoning. Becoming educated with diversity of subjects, perspectives, and even a diversity of people is a well-rounded way to develop a calm and rational approach to life when you need it. Yesterday my 13 year old son yells …

Why try bird's eye?

On the art & science of mapping, and our physical positioning in relationship to the places we depict. Maps may have come about, in part, to verify that our stories are true. Maps represent personal or collective knowledge shared with others via visual depiction. Like an "X" on a treasure map, the X tells a story, indicates direction and distance, …
