An old teacher "revisited" me this week. I haven't seen him in over 25 years. He was a joyful man who taught me to breathe out forcefully when hurt. This is opposite of what most of us do – which is take gasping breath in at the moment of shock.

I had fallen, so I did the technique, and it worked. More about this simple pain reliever below.

I found it interesting that his teaching came to me exactly when I needed it. I hadn't thought of him in ages, but here he was, in a way. I know many people have these experiences: a memory or "visitation" when times require it.

Maybe you've experienced this too?

Science tells us memories arise because of physical, emotional, or environmental triggers. But when a helpful axiom pushes into our awareness, maybe we can also see it as internal guidance?

And by focusing on that which worked, perhaps we can train ourselves to receive more good and useful guidance more often.

There is a huge cultural push to remember the rough stuff, heal old wounds, and process grief and trauma. And I can't knock this. Sometimes that's all we have: revisiting our tough moments, finding a bit of light.

Honestly though, trying to heal trauma and re-write my story has left me stuck for years. When remembering trauma, it's like, well, trauma. What I'm interested in now is uncovering wisdom and raising up useful guidance for the sake of moving forward and helping others.

So, in the spirit of pulling up some helpful axioms, here are 7 random things people taught me that I remember now and again.

  • Life runs by mechanics.
  • Love is what holds everything together.
  • Do onto others as you would have done to you.
  • Do not do unto others what you would not have done to you.
  • Nature is pervasive | Nature abhors a vacuum.
  • Do not put there anything you would not want on the front page of the newspaper.
  • Forgiveness can change the past.
It may be helpful to write your own list of those axioms that have guided you well in life– it's a way to re-visit people and positives and perhaps feel well-connected once again.

With gratitude,
Elizabeth

recovering fast from a fall

How purposeful breathing can heal trauma-in-the-making and stop pain. I just fell going down my back steps. As a 57 year old woman, the fear and negativity around falling is huge. Breaking bones, twisting ankles, and generally getting sidelined from the game of life and impediments to getting sh!t done had become mental ogres of the highest order. Also, while …

A true story about flipping the verbal bird and ungraceful pimping in New York City's art world? Let me share a little about my time in Greenwich Village in the 1990s. Tony1 sold Christmas trees on the official 'Corner of Walk and Don't Walk' for two seasons. This Corner was the far edge of Bleecker Street, where a strip of …
