You may have noticed my new email address. Well, I'm in the middle of a website migration and shifting a whole bunch digital stuffs over to this new domain.
|
And I'm trying to stay on target with Tuesday emails to you too.
|
The shift from mommess.com to emmpress.com is a story –– one I'm telling live online. No staging sites, no big launches, just live changes in real time. In cinematic fashion, I'm fading out of the old way while fading in a new thing.
|
and, it's a touch messy*
When film editors create transitions between movie scenes, there is often a span of film when both the old scene and the new are visible: each is semi-transparent and layered on each other, in a continually changing ratio of transparency for each that always adds up to 100%.
|
Any one of these transition frames can look confusing, or if you set up the edit "just so," incredibly interesting. For me right now, the old and the new can be seen all at once, and neither are fully formed. Mommess is fading away before I ever finished it.
|
That's parenting for you, but I digress.
So EMMpress.com will serve as my domain name for awhile, a container for my creative energy online. I can hope I live up to the name.

Here's why I chose it:

It keeps continuity in my initials, which have been the same throughout my life, even after taking my husband's last name, EMM.
|
The name plays with several variants of the word press.
|
The name nods favorably to a helpful bit of open-source software called WordPress* that has helped me and tens of thousands build livelihoods out of thin air. Since version 1.4, I believe. WordPress provided an open-source digital foundation that supported me, my family, my art, and dozens of other small businesses and public libraries I've helped along the way.
|
Still more press: I also care deeply about journalism, and plain sharing of empirical facts, for people to read exactly as they are. So there's that press.
|
And although makers like me are not the press, we bring a certain kind of pertinent information about the moment to people. Some can see and feel this – perhaps it helps them feel connected.
Then there is empress as royalty. Honestly, there is no reason not to grant yourself a title in your creative life, even if you do not seek subjects. Anyone can feel sovereign, and understand their role in making their own experience, which is an empowered place to be. I wish this for you, but please also know, it is also not easy.

I don't know about you, but at this phase in my life empowerment feels in order.
Also, empress tarot card stands for self-care, fertility, and love of nature among other beautiful, feminine-principle things. This fits well this time I'm birthing my post-menopausal self. Hey, the basics like my morphing body and mind are affecting my worldview, so why not lean into these things with grey-haired flair?

And what you'll likely find in the coming months is kind of like a printing press, with more art, writing, helpful ideas, and empowering questions for you.
So, I'll be here finding levity, healing, and freedom in my work. I hope to share encouragement, enthusiasm, new points of view, and good stuff with you. Oh yeah, and set up 301 redirects, and fix up all my old links all over the internet too.

And in keeping with the way mommess immediately went from being 'mommy blog' to political screed (2016, do you remember?), there may be some nudges toward democratic processes and positive action too.

We can't be afraid of free speech. Truly free, like artists and poets and real people do every day. Creative speech. Practicing it is an act of courage, and a stretch toward the new. Leaders have permission to speak freely, so do artists, musicians, poets, creatives and comedians. I hope to encourage you to embrace this more in your life too.
