When I'm 64
Assemblage 2025 (because Beatles & music fests are on my mind)

The first time I learned about the achievements of threes was from a woman in my yoga class. She was also named Elizabeth, wildly flexible, and had just moved from the west coast, to the east. She told me how she had experienced a divorce in California, and had no money, no job, and no place to stay, but created a simple focus to help her get to where she needed to be next:

White
Woods
Water

Within two weeks, an acquaintance from a seaside village in Rhode Island contacted her. Would she be willing to stay in a caretaker's home? The house was white, the interior full of beams and visible wood, the place and surrounded by trees, and it was on the water.

Simplifying Focus in Crisis

When my father and his wife were in health crisis far away, and my brother and I needed miracles to happen near-daily to get him and his wife the care they needed, I set my phone home screen to a graphic with the following ideals and got to work making calls. The words were:

Safety
Accommodation
Grace

These three ideas helped me focus on their safety first, their personal preferences, care, and living arrangements second, and reminded me daily to accept grace. We needed grace to do all the steps to accomplish the first two.

And grace came, over and over again. The number of strangers who bent, broke or otherwise sidestepped the rules to help humans in distress was astonishing. A wing of buildings opened just in time to get my dad housed with proper care immediately, we chatted with strangers could get past security to feed his wife in place, friends gave cash that we sent through the mail to willing, but financially underground caretakers.

Professionals, and non-pros alike moved mountains to keep them safe, fed, to get proper medical care, and to help us accommodate them in the ways they wanted. I will forever be grateful for seeing such a display of human love.

The words were like faith wrapped into a prioritized plan.

3 Questions for Group Leaders

I have also seen how groups can do amazing things if participants integrate the answers for the next 3 questions at the start of the workshop/teaching/meeting/project. Having these identity and action ideas addressed early helps everyone feel comfortable and participate fully, exactly as they are. When the entirety of a person is present and participating, amazing things happen.

Who am I?
Who are you? (participants indicate this for themselves)
What are we here to do together?

If you lead groups, this concept comes from the personal development movements in the 1970s, and still holds true. Everyone, even 'class clowns,' 'flight leaders, 'suck ups' 'good old boys', 'disruptors,' and 'bosses' have important roles to play when you want to do things together.

3 Statements for Successful Community Events

This week I wrote at length about a philosophy I've carried awhile. I developed it while working in restaurants and music festivals, and it guides me in promoting large-scale public events to this day. Right now, I'm actively promoting the Wakefield, RI Oktoberfest – a family-friendly event with a huge live music component. Like other events I've promoted, this event is open to everyone, is community-building, and showcases local talent, arts organizations and artisans, local leaders, businesses, and organizations. Everyone is important in making it happen.

Because these events require care of the public along with organizers, stakeholders, sponsors, the public, vendors, and the guests, equanimity is at the fore. As is defining "what we do here" by depicting it and describing it in words, over and over. In this case: what we do here is enjoy spending time in our town with our townspeople, listen to music, dance, eat, drink and enjoy fall together, outdoors.

Why '3' themes work

When I first heard about Elizabeth's 3 word theme, I immediately started experimenting with it. A few years later, I decided in a partner I desired intelligence, humor, and integrity. I was fortunate to soon thereafter meet my husband of now 20 years (holy moly, we just had that anniversary. Representing 10x longer than any relationship I'd had up until that time). So you know, it worked again.

The power of 3 works in part because it is easy to remember and you develop it yourself based on your own values. I believe it's triple-nature works because it has rhythm too. It is very easy to feel a triple beat in your body when you recite your theme. And when your whole self is engaged, it's much easier to connect with others who are of the same ilk. You kind of do a dance across space and time, even when you mostly work remotely, like me.

Wishing you an amazing day with the lovely and altruistic power of 3. Feel free to share your new statement, or stick it on your phone lock screen behind all those little icons.

With gratitude,
Elizabeth

Three phrase philosophy for hosting quality community events

And defining some roles while I'm at it. Every large-scale event has a producer. Producers are people who brings teams together, pays artists, hires contractors, handles grounds, fencing, permits and staffing, and oversees structural business elements to create a trusted 'container' for gathering. Producers may also handle marketing and usually handle the money. Producers should also have a vision, the …

POLITICAL ACTION AREA: It's best to connect with your local civic groups, and show up in the ways you can. Peaceful crowd sizes matter, as does your positive energy, community spirit, and adherence to non-violence.
