You've probably noticed, I write about seeing a lot. As a maker of visual stuffs and a human being trying to make sense of an oddly complicated and shifting space called "life," seeing interesting and beautiful truths and things makes me feel amazing.
|
I wonder if this has something to do with my dad being a new optometrist around the time I was born. Growing up, when I spoke about things not countable or measurable, he'd call to the concept of perceiving while drawing out the word and with emphasis.
"That is a matter of your pperrceptionnn," he'd counter after I'd said something regarding emotions or ideas. I grew up revisiting whatever I'd said that got that response, to try to discern only the measurable bits.

Not a bad exercise: this practice helped me create a space between my direct perception and feelings and my interpretations. I think this tendency, to count measurables, also serves as a discernment practice, even if it does not represent the entirety of what we can experience as perceptive humans.

Perceiving is mysterious. It carries more than facts.
In optometrist parlance, perceiving is a first layer of cognition that takes place after the eye's cells take in the light, and relay an image to the back of our retina.
|
Once it is there we can begin to name the thing: chair, tree, orange, sky.
|
The names we say, the meanings we make, the judgements we call about what we see...well, that process is a bit of mystery, and is supported by personal history, shared language and pattern recognition.
The sky is clear.
The sky is blue.

Looking at a piece of art for a long time can help us see more deeply. Exploring systems that that combine measurables and meaning is a great way to hone this skill too.
