"Shades | Blinds" Markup on photo from Sept 11

My brother just made me guffaw. Another reason why I love my people. I am blessed beyond belief to walk alongside some brilliant absurdists, dramatists, creatives, and kind folk too.
This week I wrote about trauma and the 'superpowers' that can come about because of tough circumstances.
As I told some of my own experiences, I linked the ideas of reinvention to Elizabeth (The Cate Blanchett movie). Mostly because she was a bastard child in difficult circumstances who went on to rule England for 45 years later named The Golden Age.
And even with my focus drifting to the 1500s, I found myself feeling overexposed by including my own life in the post. So I spent a few days stressing about the wisdom of sharing my story in this way - fearful I'd feel that I was sending a bit of my body and brain to your inbox. I was on the fence about why write at all for days. Near tears.
Then someone sent me a note that something in my writing was helpful to them.
Sweet relief. Then an artwork about Lady Godiva spoke to me with another supportive view. I'm talking the John Collier painting from 1897. Lady Godiva's naked ride was a challenge by her husband in response to her plea to lower taxes for the people of Coventry, England. A modest woman, so the legend goes, the townspeople were ordered not to look out their windows during Godiva's ride.
She completed the sacrificial task with lowered head and long hair covering her body, and the rest is history.
And for some reason, writing about my boring suburban life and semi-feral childhood trauma brings mythic feelings and deep dramas to a head. That's probably why creative people make things, and audiences need them in turn.

Stories inform and art heals. For real.
As for weaving in a pool shark before I wrap this thing, my elderly mom has some memory issues, and asks the same logistical questions over and over. Staying on top of the facts with her – the who is doing what when – can feel like an exercise of excessive repetition. But she's 100% alive in personality and spirit, with laughter as she delights in life, and deep wisdom as she advises on personal myths.
The absurdity of most things makes her laugh. This may be her superpower.
So my brother just told me he created a bit of a tale which entertains her, him, and now me too. Instead of answering looping logistical questions about the family, he's created an ongoing tale of my husband being a pool shark named 'Teach," with a trusty side kick named "One-Eyed Jacka$$."
She's interested every day in the latest chapter of 'our' antics, and even if fictionalized, they bring levity to the lot of us.
Ah, sweet reinvention. I think I can see who I've become, and I'm laughing loud and long with tears in my eye.
Tell your tales of sweet and salty reinventions anytime. Thank you for your time,

On the flip side of life, trauma is your honor
After disasters, harsh realities, assh*les, and accidents, we are 100% allowed to be grateful those aspects of Self that help us to carry on. CRYSTALLINE CLARIFICATION HERE: this piece is not about whitewashing trauma. It is also not about justifying it either, even if there is a bit of "silver lining" present. Creating physical or psychological trauma for others is …

Some content on my site is political, some personal, much of it philosophical, and all of it meant to shine some light into the lives of my readers, because it was written to shine light into mine.

POLITICAL ACTION AREA: It's best to connect with your local civic groups, and show up in the ways you can. Peaceful crowd sizes matter, as does your positive energy, community spirit, and adherence to non-violence. OCTOBER 17 is the next National No Kings Day designed to encourage early voter turn out.
