A friend recently mentioned she lives inside possibility. I think I know what she means; she asks the world extraordinary questions and settles on no particular answers. So I'm guessing she may feel most happy exploring the outer reaches of mind, lifted by masters who live on in books, art, and symphonies, among other things.
What about you?
Many folks find themselves happiest while gardening or being outdoors. Others through connecting with people to accomplish things together. Some feel their best by reading, travel, yoga, sports, decorating, cooking, biking, meditation, running, building, or one of a thousand things that bring on internal states of sustained happiness, enjoyment, and focus. If you work at it, maybe you feel sustained graceful states no matter what you do.
And the idea of living inside something other than one's body is fascinating too, but more on that in the future.
Of course, we know what people mean. We all love being in spaces that help us feel "in the zone" or "alive," or perhaps even, "at home." These states may be triggered by physical locations, or maybe by physiological cues, or activities that can happen anywhere.
I'm starting to think that experiencing ourselves through focused, zone-like experiences, is our best life.
So here are a few questions to gently nudge you toward greater clarity and empowerment around experiencing you as your best self (if you want that):
When do you experience yourself without self-consciousness? Where and how do you feel most alive, but not exhilarated?
What are you doing when you catch yourself thinking most positively about life itself?
And what was the last time you caught yourself in a state of calm knowing? What did you see, hear, smell, touch, taste, feel, and think?
If I could give you a touch of encouragement, I'd also ask you to acknowledge yourself every time you decide to enjoy your life and take action toward it – like you would thank or praise a child for doing something kind or helpful. Because, giving yourself these moments is kind and helpful. And honestly, we could all use more of that.
I have loads of faith that your happiest self is good for the rest of us too.

CRYSTALLINE CLARIFICATION HERE: this piece is not about whitewashing trauma. It is also not about justifying it either, even if there is a bit of "silver lining" present in my account. Creating physical or psychological trauma for others is wrong. Breaking the basic laws of decency, and the law of the land, in my opinion, is also wrong. Harming children …

I realized yesterday, the soaring health care costs I'm experiencing are mostly about keeping me in strong bones and boobs. My entire adult life, I've avoided being considered "high maintenance." It was a derogatory warning given me as a young person that seemed to only afflict women. So to avoid ridicule, I doubled down on being natural and easy, and …
