"Gold" East Matunuck Beach Today

It is nearly spring, and this melting pile of blizzard mizzle has made for sloppy steps for sneakered feet and shows the start of more saturated color.

Green was in my 'story' yesterday, gold in it today, and violet because I made a friend by that name while out with my dog. Nature walks rule.

My creative life is in the middle of a messy migration too – my brand, that is. I don't like this word – reminds me of cattle, but what other word can so rapidly describe a online identity overhaul?

Brandy Brand Brand

And just so you know, in marketing, no one needs a perfect brand or launch to move forward with new aspects of their work. Launches are for Elon Musk, Bezos and other billionaires who like to shoot fiery phalli into space. But I digress.

It's also not lost on me that green, gold, and purple are the colors of Mardi Gras as well, an end-of-winter, kind of fun and spirited thing.

As an aside, I've worked with some folks with deep knowledge of the real music of our country that stems from Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta (with the deepest roots in Africa). And I am watching a music company I've loved metamorphose as a younger generation picks up generational rhythm and rolls with it. So happy to see this happening. Keep going!

EMMpress Mess

And as of today if you visit my personal website, you'll witness the start of a new chapter called EMMpress. And you'll likely see plenty of vestiges of the old mommess purple and permalinks, maybe even mobile responsive hiccups and bad transitions too. That's because this weekend I simply stuck an emmpress bag on top of mommess.com's head instead of migrating content properly.

I shoved EMMpress into existence before I could do it "right," in part because I can. Being one's own boss is great for this. And, the world shifted around me the moment I claimed this new domain, as it is known to do sometimes. Now I feel warmer, free to write what I want, break some outdated marketing rules and carry on. With, you know, human-made long form and digital abstract art.

What's this press about?

EMMpress is about my name + independent press + a shimmer of royalty with an appropriate non-profit nod to WordPress. In Tarot, the Empress stands for self-care, creativity, and connection to nature among other things. At a later date, you'll likely also find physical art for sale, subscription & community offerings and more genuine work. Am I monetizing? I don't care for that word either. Nature provides.

____________

In nature, migrations are messy, or at least fluid. Birds may change direction or timing according to weather, pressure, or shift suddenly when bold phenomena like eclipses and volcanoes go down. Seasonal transitions (the elder of migration) happen slowly some years, rapidly on others.

What the dirt, sand, moss, seaweed, shells and birds are doing in this current thaw, and what I'm doing in my work, and perhaps even what's going on in the culture... is a flippin' mess. Spring springing.

Let's keep our heads on straight, practice kindness and creativity in all realms and turn any pissyness into beautiful art and music, not war and greed. Yeah, you hear me. That's the way I'm moving forward. Flipping the bird to anyone who'll look (but like an artist).

Another thing I know about a spring melt in New England is the colors feel saturated in water, full of promise and punch, and carry the visceral feel of cold, lush love and justice, and the promise of beautiful new stuffs.

Happy warm day to you. Let me know if any of this lands and if collaborations are actually cool.

With gratitude,
Elizabeth

covering: artist's statement

I cover nature. Daily drawings are digital finger painting atop photos, and include collage-symbols made from other moments in time. These personal symbols are stored as images in my phone. I collage with them, and draw atop using only my fingers. It's digital art (of the digits) in a digital age. Someone must make the best of this. These pieces …

When a mound of sand sends you to the stratosphere

Originally published as newsletter 09/24/2025 This photo above is of sand mound about 10 inches wide, and reminds me of hurricane clouds. In this photo I also see the surface of the moon; craters, landscape and topography. I took this snapshot in a wide stance so my sneakers wouldn't show, and had to shoo Winnie out of the way, lest …

POLITICAL ACTION AREA It's likely best to plug into your local groups, and show up in the ways you can. Peaceful crowd sizes matter, as does your positive energy and adherence to non-violence. It's been said that once 3.5% of the population takes to the street, tyranny cannot stand. Perhaps if 2.7% of the population takes to the street, we can prevent Tyranny from getting up in the first place.
