So the image above, drawn atop a photo with collage bits from Botticelli's Birth of Venus, coffee filters that had blown onto my kitchen floor and pattern studies, looks to me like a woman stretching.
|
Perhaps with her hair on fire. You know, it's been a trying time.
I almost never show my art to anyone before moving on to the next one. I tend to draw and write mostly for myself; to stay sane, and to have a happy day. Yet this time, I showed my husband.

"Cool, I like the bird," he says.
"You see a bird?!"
|
"Yeah, with the big head and white outlined eye - like a hummingbird's beak at a flower."
|
Maybe this is the power of sharing art, and the revelatory nature of it, even for the maker. I honestly had not seen that. I was delighted. I love hummingbirds.
Making art has always been like that for me, even when I was little. The meaning would come later, after I'd switched from "making" state to an "observing" one. The surprise of seeing something new is a joy. Especially if it came from my own hand.

Have you ever done anything like that? Made something then, with different eyes, seen it anew?
As for this shifting livlihood of mine, I've been making art and sharing it now for many years, one piece after another, and keeping it pretty quiet and not seeking much in the way of sales, gallery recognition, or credentialing. In part because I've been working for money, doing "respectable" digital marketing, and in part to preserve the purity of the process.

Yet I believe if you are doing what we are meant to do – you don't need to prove anything to anyone.
And, I also got tired of endless days making protest art that basically said, "WTF America? How could you elect this man?" and "Inclusion not Delusion." So much upset. So many signs. So this latest phase of my creative work is about remaining free in my expression, creating beauty, being true to the moment, and calming TF down.

And, it works. Now I see it's more fun to share what we see with others too, even when we see it differently.
Sharing my work (I post often on Instagram) and reading your comments and hearing back from you what you see is an absolute joy.
